In 1882, the Pearl Street generating station provided 110 volts of electrical power to 59 customers in lower Manhattan. In 1881, he left Menlo Park to establish facilities in several cities where electrical systems were being installed. In January 1880, Edison set out to develop a company that would deliver the electricity to power and light the cities of the world. He began to manufacture and market it for widespread use. Over the decades following Davy’s creation, scientists such as Warren de la Rue, Joseph Wilson Swan, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans had worked to perfect electric light bulbs or tubes using a vacuum but were unsuccessful in their attempts.Īfter buying Woodward and Evans' patent and making improvements in his design, Edison was granted a patent for his own improved light bulb in 1879. Edison was driven to perfect a commercially practical, efficient incandescent light bulb following English inventor Humphry Davy’s invention of the first early electric arc lamp in the early 1800s. While Edison was not the inventor of the first light bulb, he came up with the technology that helped bring it to the masses. Army to bring music to the troops overseas during World War I. His first words spoken into the phonograph's mouthpiece were, "Mary had a little lamb." Though not commercially viable for another decade, the phonograph brought him worldwide fame, especially when the device was used by the U.S. That same year, Western Union encouraged him to develop a communication device to compete with Alexander Graham Bell's telephone. In 1876, Edison moved his expanding operations to Menlo Park, New Jersey, and built an independent industrial research facility incorporating machine shops and laboratories. In one such instance, Edison devised for Western Union the quadruplex telegraph, capable of transmitting two signals in two different directions on the same wire, but railroad tycoon Jay Gould snatched the invention from Western Union, paying Edison more than $100,000 in cash, bonds and stock, and generating years of litigation. Often that was Western Union Telegraph Company, the industry leader, but just as often, it was one of Western Union's rivals. In 1870, he set up his first small laboratory and manufacturing facility in Newark, New Jersey, and employed several machinists.Īs an independent entrepreneur, Edison formed numerous partnerships and developed products for the highest bidder. He will occupy a unique and exalted position in the history of his native land, which might well be proud of his great genius and undying achievements in the interest of humanity.” (Nikola Tesla)”īy the early 1870s, Edison had acquired a reputation as a first-rate inventor. For it will retain a perfect mechanical memory of many things which we may forget, even though we have said them.” “We know nothing we have to creep by the light of experiments, never knowing the day or the hour that we shall find what we are after.” “Everything, anything is possible the world is a vast storehouse of undiscovered energy.” “The recurrence of a phenomenon like Edison is not very likely. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man - and I will show you a failure.” “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” “Hell, there ain't no rules around here! We're trying to accomplish something.” “I always invent to obtain money to go on inventing.” “The phonograph, in one sense, knows more than we do ourselves. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.” “Restlessness is discontent - and discontent is the first necessity of progress. “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” “Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.” “I am proud of the fact that I never invented weapons to kill.” “I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy.

"In terms of how I drew the book, Simon & Schuster didn't want me to change the way Owly talks or add any words to the stories. Over the years I've been able to experiment with color on various posters, prints and the latest covers for the graphic novels, so it was a gradual learning process," Runton said. "I experimented with a few different techniques but decided to draw the book in the same way I drew the graphic novels. He said that while coloring "Owly" required a few new tricks, he did not alter his line art for the picture book, though other changes were necessary. Working with a mass market publisher and working in color for the first time both contributed to a longer production process than is usually the case for Runton's "Owly" books. As a kid I really loved stuffed animals so I naturally wanted to see Owly as one. Now, we didn't know that he would be that popular, it was just something I wanted to do. Owly got so much attention that we manufactured them and they were a huge hit. My mom and I created a prototype and he traveled around to shows with us. "Around 2005, Chris Staros, my publisher at Top Shelf, and I toyed around with the idea of creating a little plush version of Owly. I just went with it and enjoyed the process and the results," Runton said of the series' development. So, when I started drawing Owly, I drew the stories as comics. I always read comics when I was growing up and loved the storytelling aspects of the medium. "When I first thought of Owly, I had planned to make his stories into picture books. I use vignettes and full-page drawings (including spreads), to really make the characters come to life."Īn "Owly" picture book was a longtime goal of Runton's, and the arrangement between Top Cow and Simon & Schuster came about out of a desire to make sure it reached as many potential new readers as possible, the cartoonist told CBR. It was an interesting exercise because there aren't any panels. I really had to edit down the story to the most important panels and really let it breathe. The format also allowed me to experiment with a slightly simplified version of my storytelling. "Families love Owly and it seemed like a great way to expand our audience. "The main purpose of the format was to introduce Owly to a whole new kind of reader who might not be aware of the graphic novels," Runton said. The cartoonist hopes that "Owly and Wormy" will reach a whole new audience. 'Friends All Aflutter' originally started out as a graphic novel, but when Simon & Schuster approached us to do a children's book, we decided this was the perfect story for this format." "It's truly meant to be enjoyed by all ages. Runton said, though, that at its heart the book is "just another Owly story" and that the already all-ages-friendly series was not being adapted to suit a younger audience. "Owly and Wormy: Friends All Aflutter" is a bit different from the other "Owly" books in that it's a square, 40-page hardcover picture book, in color, published by Simon & Schuster. The Rapid Bullets, Barrier and Special power-ups from the first NES game are also included in this game. The player can charge this gun by holding down the B button and then releasing it, shooting an even larger projectile that passes through most fodder enemies and causes an even bigger explosion (with 8 sparks) when it hits a large target. The NES version uses the same power-ups as the original NES game, but changes the function of the "fire ball" power-up from a gun that fires small fireballs that travel in a corkscrew pattern to a large projectile that spreads fire after hitting its target. The order of the latter stages and bosses are also slightly different, with new bosses featured in this version (including a new final boss). There are three stages unique to the NES version: a high-tech base, a mountain and an alien nest, all vertically-scrolling stages. The gameplay and graphics of Super C are similar to the port of the first Contra game. A PAL version of the NES game, titled Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces, was released in 1992. Ports Nintendo Entertainment System Ī home version of Super Contra was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System on February 2, 1990, in Japan and in April 1990 in North America, where it was retitled Super C. This means the game will be completely over when the player completes the final stage again or runs out of lives. On the second loop, the player's score, lives and weapons (including hyper shells) will be carried over from the previous playthrough and the game's difficulty will be set to its highest level (regardless of the machine's actual setting), but the continuation feature will cease to be available. However, the English version ends the game after the player has cleared the final stage, whereas the Japanese version restarts the game from the first stage after the end credits are shown. The two versions of the game are almost identical aside from the language of the text shown during the intro sequence. Two versions of the Super Contra arcade game were produced: an English version (which was distributed not just in North America, but also in Europe, where the game retained its original title, in contrast to the Gryzor variant of the first arcade game) and a Japanese version. Unlike the predecessor, each player can now continue at any time, with no need to wait until the other player runs out of lives. Throughout each stage, the player must fight their way through the enemy's line of defense (including a few mid-bosses) until they reach the final target waiting at the end.Īfter running out of lives, the player is not allowed to continue up to five times before the game is entirely over this depends on the DIP switch settings. Stages 1, 3 and 4 are played from the standard side-scrolling perspective, while Stages 2 and 5 employ the top-down perspective. The game consists of five stages, which are set in a military base, a jungle and the alien's lair. The player can store more than one hyper shell at a time and the count is carried over between overhead stages. During overhead stages, the player can also pick up a "hyper shell" item that destroys all on-screen enemies, which can be launched at any time during these stages by pressing the jump button. The power-ups in Super Contra are represented by the actual guns the player's character wields instead of the Falcon-shaped letter icons from the previous game. This time, weapons can be upgraded by picking up the same power-up twice in a row, resulting in greater destructive power. The available weapons include a machine gun, a spread gun, a bomb gun and a laser gun. The player can replace their default gun with one of four possible weapons by destroying the flying item capsules that appear throughout each stage. The controls remain mostly the same during the side-scrolling segments, with the only difference is that the player can now control the height of their jump by holding the joystick upwards or downwards while pressing the jump button. Instead, Super Contra features vertically-scrolling stages played from an overhead perspective, in which the player can move in eight directions. The game retains the side-scrolling format from the previous game, discarding only the pseudo-3D and fixed screen segments. The left player controls Bill (who wears green in this installment), while the right player controls Lance (who wears purple). Like in the original Contra, the game can be played by up to two players simultaneously. Inclined surfaces, as shown here, were not present in the original Contra. That look is completely different from Baum's book. The Winkies in this movie look much like the WInkies in The Wizard of Oz, where they're the Wicked Witch of the West's army. There's a short moment where James Franco's Oz walks past a herd of multi-colored horses, a callback to The Horse Of A Different Color, which was not in Baum's book and was created just for the movie. The Wicked Witch of the East does not seem (at least on my first viewing) to have any special shoes at all.īut that doesn't mean Raimi's film isn't drenched in design that recalls the 1939 film. In any case, Raimi's movie simply avoids the question of footwear altogether. It's possible that Warner Bros, who now has the rights to the 1939 movie, wouldn't want to share, as they've been making noise about resurrecting the property themselves. This time around it seems like nobody wanted to bother. Disney paid through the nose to license the image from MGM. In 1985 Disney released Return to Oz, and while that movie was an amalgamam of Oz book sequels (and featured character designs directly lifted from the Oz book illustrations, as opposed to The Wizard of Oz, which created mostly new designs), director Walter Murch wanted to use the famous Ruby Slippers. In Baum's book Dorothy has Silver Shoes, but it was decided by MGM that red would be much more exciting in Technicolor, and so the Ruby Slippers were born. Like so many elements from the musical movie, the Ruby Slippers were an invention of the production. The most obvious difference is the lack of the famous Ruby Slippers. Frank Baum books are in the public domain, the 1939 movie remains under copyright protection. But the reality is that the new Disney film, while based on the same L Frank Baum books as the musical, is quite different from what Victor Fleming* brought to life. After all, so much of the design and tone of Sam Raimi's new film relates directly to that movie. Protecting your hair, looking good, and saving money is usually the goal, right?įortunately, the Havana twist is the right protective style that fits the criteria. Most people seek longevity before making any protective style. The answer is simple: Havana twist is made mainly from synthetic hair fibers with the natural kinky texture known as “Havana hair.” Other hair extensions like the “kanekalon hair” can also be used as a substitute because they are much cheaper. If you love swimming, it might not be the best choice to opt for. Although Marley twists might look thinner, they could be heavier, especially when wet.The twist made from Marley’s hair requires you to seal the ends to prevent it from unraveling because it cannot seal itself like that of Havana. The extension used in making Marley twists has a more refined and smooth texture, making it look less natural.Marley twists extensions are cheaper, but it requires more to get thicker and fuller twists. Using a few strands of Marley extensions would give you thinner twists.Havana twist is much lighter in weight, so you don’t have to worry about a headache or have to carry a heavy weight on your head.Usually, before finishing a twist style, you either burn or tie the ends so that they don’t slip off, but in Havana twist, you don’t have to worry about that since it has a natural hair texture that can seal itself. The extension used in making Havana twist has a more coarse texture, making it look more like natural hair.Although expensive, it requires less quantity of extensions to make a whole complete twist. You can quickly get fuller and larger twists with just a few strands of Havana twist extensions. To tell them apart better, I gathered some valuable information to help guide you. The significant difference between them is that you use different hair extensions to make them. If you don’t look closely, you might be unable to tell the difference.
